If you’re planning an exterior painting project, timing matters more than most homeowners realize. In southern Ontario, our snowy and rainy weather can overstay their welcome, leading to potential complications with an exterior project if you start too early. This can be the difference from your paint job lasting many years, versus being ruined right from the start.
So, when is the best time to paint your home's exterior?
The Short Answer
The exterior painting season is roughly late spring to early fall (May to September), with ideal conditions typically found in June, July and September.
Why Weather Matters for Exterior Painting
Paint needs the correct conditions to properly cure and adhere to the substrate. This means looking at three factors when it comes to booking an exterior painting job, or DIYing it yourself:
Temperature
Most paints have a recommended temperature for application, either on the paint can itself or in a product data sheet.
For example, Emerald Exterior Acrylic Latex Paint from Sherwin-Williams:

Most paints are in this 35°F to 80°F, or 1.7°C to 27°C range. At Enviro Painting, we typically play it safe and wait until the overnight temperatures are above 5°C before beginning any exterior painting projects.
If it's too cold, paint won't cure properly and has an increased risk of cracking and peeling. If it's too hot, paint can dry too quickly and blister or bubble. Ultimately, you want to avoid this risk by taking an extra precaution of being diligent about the weather.

Humidity
Paints also have an ideal humidity for application. Ideally, the humidity levels should range from 40% to 70% when applying exterior paint. If the humidity is too low, you're risking the paint cracking and having too fast of a dry time. If the humidity is too high, the evaporation of water or solvents in the paint are affected and the dry time is slower. This can result in moisture being trapped under the surface, mold growing, or the paint becoming tacky and bubbly.
Rain & Moisture
Fresh paint and rain do NOT mix. Surfaces must be completely dry before beginning exterior painting. Most paints recommend 24-48 hours after without rain for the best application and curing, however, we highly recommend waiting the full 48 hours for the maximum lifespan of your painting job.
If it rains unexpectedly shortly after you painted the exterior of your home, the paint will likely have streaks from where the rivulets of water ran down the freshly painted surface. Carefully inspect the area for any signs of peeling, bubbling or cracking. Take immediate action to cover the surfaces or gently wiping away excess water (if the paint has dried enough). At the end of the day, it can be salvaged and fixed later on, provided the surface is completely dry before beginning painting again, and any surface preparations have been done in the event of any paint bubbling or cracking.
The Best Time for Exterior Painting
May
Temperatures begin to stabilize overnight, above 5°C
However, there still is a risk of cooler nights and rain
June to July
Peak painting season
Consistent, warm temperatures
Long daylight hours for faster project completion
Be wary of hotter temperatures (30°C and above) as we go further into summer
August to September
Warm days, cooler nights
Typically lower humidity than mid summer
Be wary of hotter temperatures (30°C and above) in August
Late September to October
Potentially risky as the temperatures (especially overnight) can drop below that 5°C mark
When You Should NOT Paint
For the longevity of your exterior paint job, avoid exterior painting in the Kitchener-Waterloo region during:
✖ Early spring (March to April)
✖ Extremely hot heat waves (beyond 30°C) - also a risk for your health!
✖ Times where it will be excessively rainy or humid - always keep an eye out on
the weather forecast!
✖ Late fall (October to November)
✖ Winter (November to February)
Tips to Consider for Homeowners
Even within the "right" season, timing still matters day-to-day.
Paint mid-morning to early afternoon (after dew dries)
Avoid painting in direct, intense sunlight
Use high-quality, weather-resistant paint products
How Timing Can Affect Cost & Availability
Peak exterior painting season (June to August) is also the busiest time for painting contractors in Kitchener. You could be looking at longer wait times for scheduling or higher demand pricing.
Ideally, book before the exterior painting season begins so you can lock in your spot and have it scheduled before anything comes up.
Final Thoughts
The best time to exterior paint in southern Ontario comes down to stable temperatures and proper planning around the weather forecast.
If you do everything right, your exterior painting job will last longer, look better, and require less maintenance down the line.
